At Dusk, your skin is read in CIELAB — the colour space built to match human vision. One photograph, four hundred and sixty-eight facial landmarks, and your tone lands on the Monk scale as a number.
Then we score a brand's range against where their shoppers actually fall. On one Indian catalogue we measured, three of the ten levels had nothing wearable at all — about a fifth of everyone who scanned.
Light, with a clear yellow cast. Almost every foundation range starts near here, which makes it the easiest level to shop — and the weakest test of whether a range is actually inclusive.
The middle of the scale, and the warmest of the ten references — b* reaches 26.7 here, golden rather than olive.
